Career & Technical Education

In CTE we strive to educate the whole student through academic rigor and hands on learning. We use industry standards as our measure whenever possible. We believe in learning through doing and strive to give students relevant experiences that solidify their plan for after high school.

  • The Agricultural program is a hands-on student driven, industry experience that consists of the following classes:

    • Agricultural Science
    • Aquaculture
    • Advanced Agricultural Business Management
    • Floral Design
    • Horticulture
    • Landscaping
    • Metals
    • Small Engines
    • Veterinary Science

    The leadership experience of FFA is an integral part of all agricultural classes.

  • Business and Finance
    Business and Finance is designed to meet the scope and sequence requirements of foundational business courses. Students will gain knowledge of entrepreneurships, investments, business principles and marketing. Students also enhance their communication skills by applying them to the business environment. Lastly, students can take business law classes providing them the opportunity to analyze and evaluate legal disputes in civil and criminal law.

    School-Based Enterprise (SBE). Students can also participate in our SBE. It is an entrepreneurial operation in a school setting that provides goods/services to meet the needs of the market. SBEs are managed and operated by students as hands-on learning laboratories that integrate National Curriculum Standards in marketing, finance, hospitality or management

  • Family and Consumer Sciences empowers individuals and families. Ferndale High School FACSE department offers 2 main pathways:

    Nutrition and Culinary Pathway
    The Nutrition and Culinary Pathway starts with Personal Choices which is an umbrella course that teaches units on cooking, nutrition, family finance and clothing and sewing.  Nutrition and Wellness encourages students to cook from scratch to think and practice preparing and eating nutritious foods with safety and sanitation practices in place. Culinary 1 continues the learning from N&W and adds more advanced cooking skills and knowledge.  Culinary 2 prepares students for working in the food industry by giving them opportunities to prepare food for themselves and others building on the skills they acquired in the prerequisite courses.

    The Child Development Pathway
    The Child Development Pathway begins with a semester course in Child Care Basics which is the Washington State 30 hour, 3 credit curriculum that is required to work in a Child Care/Preschool setting. Students register their completion with the Department of Early Learning.  Second semester is a practicum course which allows students to use their Child Care Basics knowledge and skills with young children in a public school classroom, home child care or preschool.  Before placement students are trained and certified in CPR and First Aid for Adults and Young Children. They also receive training in HIV/Blood Borne Pathogens.

    Both pathways provide opportunities for students to earn college credit with a Tech Prep articulation with Whatcom Community College and Bellingham Technical College.

  • Media Technology courses taught by Mr. Lucas provide students with opportunities to explore basic and advanced video production and web design, and book publishing (yearbook). Students can also get TV broadcasting/live web streaming experience in Video 2/GEM TV.

  • Photo Design 1, 2, 3, & AP courses provide students with opportunities to get into photography, graphic design, and digital art. They learn basic photography and design skills while also learning Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator software.

    While beginning students build and use their own cameras, advanced students design for the web and create animations while also creating portfolio ready photos and design pieces.

  • Sports Medicine is a hands-on Career and Technical Education class focused on potential careers in the medical fields.

    Students become a part of the sports medicine team and a part of Golden Eagle athletics by completing a Sports Medicine practicum working after school with FHS Student-athletes.

    Ferndale Sports Medicine is a member of the Washington Career and Technical Sports Medicine Association attending various leadership events and competitions with the more the 50 member schools and their students.
